A Campus Tour Using Animoto

When I first started to think about this project I did not know how I was going to create an Animoto relevant to my professional area. Working with college students as an advisor, I meet with prospective students to educate and inform them about Goodwin College.   Not being in the classroom and trying to keep with the theme of the project, creating something I could use to educate students with I came up with the idea of a tour of the campus.

My Animoto will be a tool that I can use to give students a visual view of the many features available on campus.  This Animoto can be incorporated into my daily advising sessions for students who might possibly inquire about the library, computer labs, where the student lounge is located and what floor are the sciences labs located on.  The college will become a student’s second home and we want them to feel comfortable navigating the campus. I enjoyed learning how to use this piece of technology and creating a project with it.  Animoto is a great teaching tool that can be used to educate students incorporating technology.  I think students would enjoy creating their own Animotos for many different class projects.  I have plans to use it for my travel pictures and an upcoming family reunion gathering.

  1. I overall liked your Animoto, but my one contrustive critique would be that it felt a little long because the slides were so quick. Perhaps making (for future use) one for each of the different departments, and one of the campus areas that aren't tied to a department? Never having been to Goodwin, I felt intrigued at first and then a little overwhelmed when it transitioned to the classrooms. If you keep it all together,I'd suggest using a blank slide of text like chapter headers for the different areas you show. Beautiful pics and campus though, and great blog!

  2. Actually, I thought the video was an excellent introduction to the college. It gave a general overview and then introduced specific areas of the college. The template chosen worked well for showing the college in the winter. For a student new to the college or a prospective student, this video will work well for an orientation. It can also provide a seque into a discussion with students about the resources available on campus. Also, as someone who has yet to visit the campus, this video gave me an excellent feel of how update the campus is. I was struck by the contemporary nature of the computer lab, for instance, and some of the other areas on campus for academic resources, and liked outdoor feel of the campus.

    1. In the comment box on the assessment document you inquired about the pictures. I took the pictures myself the week after the big snow storm. I agree with you, two purposes are to use this in break out sessions for orientation and as a discussion about the resources available on campus. It will give the students a visual picture of the resources I am speaking about during my advising sessions. This was a fun project to create!

  3. Frank, with being a member of the staff at Goodwin as well I think you did a great job capturing the essence of the college through your images on your Animoto. Any incoming student would definitely find this helpful as they can get a feel for the layout of the school because you were able to capture it from many different angles.

  4. This is an incredibly creative way to deploy Animoto. Any school which must recruit students, such as the high school at which I teach, could use a tool like this as part of an overall marketing strategy.
